Getting Ready at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017

Things are all full steam ahead and by the time we are posting this now, our display is all set up! Here are some photos of the process. We are putting together a Linley (educational display), similar to this one we did at Cardiff only on a larger scale. Normally we go for a floral display so it’s always fun to put something different together.

Along with everyone putting their displays together inside the marquees, the outdoor show gardens are making some big progress! It’s always really neat to see them putting them together and then going back to see them once they are finished.

We are posting lots of photos daily of Chelsea Flower Show on our twitter account, if you want to follow along you can find us at https://twitter.com/plantagogo.

My heucheras are going leggy

This question was asked by
Daphne

some of my plants have got very leggy can I split them and re-pot – if so when?

Hi Daphne
Yes you can do that at this time of year
Just reply and lower them down to co we the stalk
Never bury the crown though
Some varieties do it more than others
Forever purple doesn’t seem as prone to going stalk as some varieties

Plant Availability

This question was asked by
Darroch Hall

Good afternoon,
I am just enquiring if the online plant catalogue will be updated soon, and which plants will become available again this year. I am hoping to get my hands on the following:
Copper Cascade
Paprika
Redstone Falls
Yellowstone Falls
Fire Frost
Many thanks for your time, especially as this must be a very busy time of year for you.
Cheers,
Darroch

Hi Darroch
We up date the website nearly everyday
Plants are selling so fast sometimes they are not on there for more than a hour or two.
However we do not have an endless supply as we grow all our own and never know what your all going to want from day to day.
We have many more varieties that will be coming ready for the end of June middle of July, weather permitting.
You will never see a time that everything is available in one hit as it’s nearly impossible for us to do that.
Most of what your wanting will be ready in that June /July period.
Heucherella fire frost won’t be available again this year sorry once sold out !
Hope this helps

Malvern Spring Show 2017 Photos and Getting Ready for RHS Chelsea

It was another great show weekend at Malvern Spring show last weekend. We were happy our display got a Gold Medal, after all the hard work it’s nice to see others appreciate our plants and displays as well.

We got a chance to have a wander around some of the stunning show gardens over the weekend and although rain was forecasted, we got some lovely warm sunny weather. Below are some photos of our display and some of the others that we particularly liked.

Our sales plants ready to go to their new homes. Thanks so much to all who supported us and bought plants this weekend, we hope they make great additions to your gardens!

Vicky even posed for a photo with English Gardening expert Carol Klein in front of our display. Carol was presenting a BBC Gardener’s world live on the weekend, of which we were on for a fleeting minute.

Now that we have finished Malvern, we are getting ready for the big one of the year, RHS Chelsea Flower show in London. Here we will be introducing this lovely new Heuchera, ‘Sweet Caroline’ TM (Fox series) which you can see above as a first look! It has a stunning mix of dark and pale green foliage with sweet pink flowers.

We will also be doing a little bit of a different display than we normally do, based on all the questions we get asked by you our customers about how to grow your heucheras, hecherellas and tiarellas and hopefully make the growing and caring for process a bit easier. These sorts of displays are judged in a different way and a bit tougher to get a gold, so we are working very hard and hope to get it right.

As we are now fully into the busy show season, please be patient with us with mail orders, they may take a little bit longer than usual to get to you as we are away quite often. We use every day we are in the nursery to pack up your precious plants and get them out to you though, so don’t let this put you off ordering!

How do I take care of Heucheras in containers?

This question was asked by
David Carr

Bearing in mind the problem weevil, can heucheras be successful in a large container as perhaps a one year trial, please? I am a gardener and realise soil and watering are factors. I have a very small garden and have to use planters.
What compost mix is best and presumably spacing not too vital for the one season,.
Thank you any tips most appreciated from experts.
David

Hi David
Yes heucheras do very well in containers as long as you make sure they get watered and you keep an eye open for vine weevil issues.
If you put the pot on raised feet to ensure free drainage, as water logging can be an issue
Any free draining compost such as John Innes no 3
Spacing doesn’t really matter if it’s a short term project
Dead head to get the best foliage and repeat flowering
Feed with seaweed liquid feed such as seasol
If your keping the heucheras long term …..water with nematodes in August and again in September
In spring take a look for vine weevil grubs and wash roots if you do find any .
Hope this helps
