How do I take care of Heucheras in containers?

This question was asked by
David Carr

Bearing in mind the problem weevil, can heucheras be successful in a large container as perhaps a one year trial, please? I am a gardener and realise soil and watering are factors. I have a very small garden and have to use planters.
What compost mix is best and presumably spacing not too vital for the one season,.
Thank you any tips most appreciated from experts.
David

Hi David
Yes heucheras do very well in containers as long as you make sure they get watered and you keep an eye open for vine weevil issues.
If you put the pot on raised feet to ensure free drainage, as water logging can be an issue
Any free draining compost such as John Innes no 3
Spacing doesn’t really matter if it’s a short term project
Dead head to get the best foliage and repeat flowering
Feed with seaweed liquid feed such as seasol
If your keping the heucheras long term …..water with nematodes in August and again in September
In spring take a look for vine weevil grubs and wash roots if you do find any .
Hope this helps

Trailing heuchellas in silver, purple and pink

This question was asked by
Jo Scott

Hi there
I have an ugly old retaining wall that I want to transform into a living wall. I would like to plant heucherella along the top of the wall – in the soil that is being retained if that makes sense! My colour scheme is purples, pinks, whites, silvers etc and i have a few purple heuchera already which I love – these don’t trail though. Would you have any trailing versions in the purple/grey colours that I could buy?
Many thanks
Jo

Hi Jo
Thank you for your email
At the moment we have glacier falls that has green with a silver cast and white flowers that would suit
However there is a new variety coming ready in July that is called heucherella Plum Cascade and that will trail too
Hope this helps

Harrogate Spring Flower Show

We had a great long weekend at Harrogate spring flower show, and even brought home a premier gold award! The plants are looking really great this year so we are very proud of them. Here’s a few photos from our display if you didn’t get a chance to see it.

We will now be starting to get ready for our open days, May 6th and 7th at our nursery. There will be lots of cake to eat and plants to take home. We hope you’ll be able to make it!

When will Tiarella Raspberry Sundae be available to buy?

This question was asked by
Heather Robinson

The RHS magazine, The Garden, announced you will introduce Tiarella Raspberry Sundae at the Chelsea flower show.
I would like to buy one and would be grateful if you will let me know as soon as it is available so I can put in an order.
With thanks, Heather.

Hi Heather
Thank you for your interest
Its very pretty, new introduction.
We will have some Tiarella ‘Raspberry Sundae’ TM (Fox Series) online at Chelsea time
They are not available until we’ve launched it at Chelsea
You will be able to register your interest online using the ‘Tell me when available’ button
Then when I make it live you will get an email when they are available to buy.
This is the best way as I get very busy and would hate to forget to remind you and you miss out !
Hope that’s OK

How can I treat Vine Weevil?

This question was asked by
Lindsay

Hello, Please could you help with suggestions. Whenever I read of vine weevil control the products to use are for pot grown plants. My Heuchera etc.are planted in the ground and I have lost few. I think another plant is being attacked but cannot find the the little ****. Is there anything I can use to treat the plant and ground? I have about 20 plants.
Yours Sincerely, desperate , Mrs L M Lear

Hi Lindsay
Sorry to hear your having a problem.
They are a pest for lots of plants not just heucheras. Heucheras are more noticeable as they look fabulous for about 10 months (if not longer) of the year!
You can treat your garden with Nematodes which you can water into the ground once the temperature doesn’t go below 6 degrees, any lower and it kills the Nematodes.
August and September is the best time, do twice if you can.
Nematodes are the green way and because they are a living natural predator of vine weevil larvae they don’t cause other environmental issues.
That having been said one of the best ways in the spring to cope with them is to dig up the plant, wash its roots off (if it still has them) if not wash the stalk. Take a good look in the stalky bits as the grubs go in there and are hard see, pick them out with a cocktail stick.
Then before you pop back into the ground dig the ground up and search for grubs, go and have a coffee/ tea when you come back hopefully the birds will have picked the rest out if there was anymore
It’s not as hard as it sounds, but if you don’t sort them they won’t go away, it just gets worse.
If you remove the heucheras you will still have the problem just in different plant, which might not be as easy to cure.
Hope this helps
